March 16, 1859 Birthday of Russian physicist Popov
166 years ago today, on March 16th, 1859 (February 12th, 1859 in the lunar calendar), Russian physicist Popov was born. On March 16, 1859, Alexander Stapanovich Popov (1859-1906) was born in Urals. In 1977, he entered Petersburg University and taught at the Russian Navy Torpedo School after graduation. Since he realized the importance of electromagnetic waves, he began to devote himself to finding ways to receive electromagnetic waves from a long distance. In 1895, he invented a radio receiving device for electromagnetic waves emitted by the huge sparks that form lightning. In 1898, together with the Russian Navy, he realized communication between ships at a distance of more than 10 kilometers and the coast. The following year it increased to about 50 kilometers. Although people acknowledge Popov's experiment, they do not acknowledge that radio communication was invented by him. The basis provided is that Marconi (Italian physicist) carried out the experiment of transmitting wireless telegraph earlier than him. However, in Russia, people regard him as the inventor of radio. On January 13, 1906, Popov died of illness.
