On January 27th, 2008 (December 20th, 2007 in the lunar calendar), former Indonesian President Suharto died on the 27th at the age of 86. On October 17, 1963, the Indonesian army rebelled and forced President Sukarno to dissolve the parliament. Suharto, the "smiling general", took advantage of the chaos to seize the supreme power. During his more than 30 years in power, his family and network of relatives and friends controlled almost the entire Indonesian economy, creating a huge business empire. Because his family is in power, corruption, collusion between government and business, "nepotism" prevails, and social contradictions intensify. In 1998, a wave of protests swept across Indonesia, and Suharto was forced to resign. Since then, the call to liquidate its corruption crimes has been rising in Indonesia. In August 2000, the Indonesian Attorney General's Office sued Suharto for corruption. However, he refused to appear in court on the grounds of "poor physical condition", and finally the case went away. The United Nations and the World Bank listed Suharto as the world's most corrupt person, saying that his illegal gains amounted to 15 billion to 35 billion dollars.
