Mao was born in Paris on 25 January 1874 and graduated from high school at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He studied medicine in London from 1892 to 1897 and was qualified as a surgeon. His first ministerial novel, "Lisa of Lambeth" (1897), was written in a liberal style based on his opinion as a doctor in a poor district when he gave birth to mothers.

In 1903-1933, he created 30 scripts and was widely popular. In 1908, four of his four plays were performed simultaneously in four theaters in London, forming an unprecedented status in the UK. His comedy was deeply influenced by Wilde, generally with the theme of family, marriage, and love, the most famous of which was The Circle (1921).

His main achievement is novel writing. His masterpieces include: novels: The Moon and Sixpence (1919), The Shackles of the Earth (1915), Eating and Drinking (1930), The Blade (1944), etc. and more than 100 short stories, including the novel collections Tremor of Leaves (1921), Camelina Tree (1926), Akin (1933), etc.

Mao's works were translated into many foreign languages in addition to the best-selling in the United States and England. In 1952, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford. In 1954, the King of England awarded him the title of "Honorary Servant".
