The first bridge of the Strait officially opened on December 19, 1991.
Today 34 years ago, on December 19th, 1991 (November 14th, 1991 in the lunar calendar), the "First Strait Bridge" was officially opened to traffic. On the morning of December 20, 1991, the sun was shining brightly over Ludao Island, and colorful flags fluttered on the majestic Xiamen Bridge. Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, cut the ribbon for the official opening of the "First Bridge in the Strait" to traffic amid warm applause. At ten o'clock in the morning, Xiamen Mayor Zou Erjun announced the opening ceremony of Xiamen Bridge. After Shi Zhaobin, secretary of Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, delivered a speech, Jiang Zemin was very happy to cut the ribbon for the opening of the bridge. Prior to this, Jiang Zemin also inscribed the name of Xiamen Bridge. Xiamen Bridge is the current cross-sea bridge in China. The bridge consists of four parts: the main bridge, Jimei overpass, Gaoqi approach bridge and management system, with a total length of more than 6,500 meters, of which the main bridge is 2,070 meters long. After the completion of this bridge, it not only greatly alleviates the traffic congestion and congestion of the original Gao (Qi) Ji (Mei) seawall, but also connects Xiamen Island more closely with Haicang and Xinglin Taiwanese investment zones, which is of great significance to further develop these areas. Tian Jiyun, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, and other central leading comrades attended the opening ceremony. Then, Jiang Zemin and his party went to Toyama Exhibition City to visit the exhibition of ten-year construction achievements of Xiamen Special Economic Zone.
