Today, 91 years ago, on February 19th, 1934 (January 6th, 1934 in the lunar calendar), Chiang Kai-shek launched the "New Life Movement". On February 19th, 1934, Chiang Kai-shek gave a speech "The Essence of the New Life Movement" at the Nanchang Camp Expansion Memorial Week and launched the New Life Movement. He said, "The new life movement I am advocating now is to militarize the national people." He proposed to take Confucius and Mencius' "four dimensions" (courtesy, righteousness and shame) and "eight virtues (loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, love, faithfulness and peace) as moral standards to unify people's thoughts. On February 21st, Nanchang New Life Movement Promotion Association was established. On February 23rd, Chiang Kai-shek gave another speech in Nanchang, advocating that we should start with transforming people's daily life such as food, clothing, housing and transportation. Since then, Jiang gave many speeches, which were compiled into "Collection of Speeches" and widely published. I hope to push a huge "new life movement" to the whole country. Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Song Meiling carried out the "New Life Movement" in Nanchang.
