Lorraine Maazel (1930-), French-American conductor, composer and violinist. Mazel was born on March 6, 1930 in Neuilly, a town in the western suburb of Paris. At the age of 5, he started learning violin with Mordlen and piano with Armitage at the age of 7. The following year, he studied conducting with Ba Kalenikov, deputy conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1965 to 1975, he was the chief conductor of the West Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 1972 to 1982, Mazel served as music director and chief conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. Later, he was invited as the general manager and artistic director of Vienna State Opera. This is the first American conductor to receive this high honor. From 1998 to 1990, he also served as musical director of the Orchestra National de France.
