On April 27, 1978, tanks and MiG-21 fighter jets bombarded the presidential palace in Kabul, Afghanistan. On April 30, Afghanistan's President Mohammad Daoud was killed by rebel forces. Mohammed Daoud's government was overthrown by a military coup. Rebel forces have occupied the presidential palace in the capital Kabul. The army established a new government, a committee led by Abdul Qadir appointed Nur Mohammed Taraki as prime minister, banned all public gatherings and declared indefinite military control. They call it the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a landlocked country bordering the Soviet Union in the north. Pakistan is in its south, Iran is in its west, and China is in its east. The Soviet Union was its main trading partner.
