Liu Lichuan, the failed leader of the Shanghai Small Knife Society Uprising, died

"Small Knife Club" was premiered by the Shanghai Opera House Dance Troupe in 1959

The Xiaodao Society is a private secret group founded in Xiamen. It belongs to the tribe of Tiandi Society and spread to Shanghai in 1851. The members of the Shanghai Small Knife Association are mainly Fujian working people and some industrial and commercial owners in Shanghai. On September 7, 1853 (the fifth day of the eighth month of the third year of Xianfeng), shortly after the Taiping Army established the capital of Tianjing, the Shanghai Xiaodao Society launched an armed uprising under the leadership of Liu Lichuan. The rebels killed Yuan Zude, the magistrate of Shanghai, captured Wu Jianzhang alive in Shanghai Daotai, and occupied Shanghai City.

After the Shanghai Xiaodaohui Uprising, the revolutionary regime of the "Ming State" was established in accordance with the Tiandi Society's purpose of "opposing the Qing Dynasty and restoring the Ming Dynasty." The uprising masses elected Liu Lichuan as the grand marshal for the unification of politics and politics. The revolutionary regime put forward the slogan of "Eliminate corrupt officials to eliminate cruelty" and denounced the Qing government for its crimes. Therefore, many people actively participated in the revolutionary ranks, and soon the number of rebels grew to more than 10,000. Since then, Zhou Lichun, a peasant leader from Qingpu, Jiading and other places near Shanghai, led more than 4000 people to participate in the battle, making the uprising even stronger.

The Qing government had no choice but to withdraw troops from the Jiangnan camp that had originally surrounded Tianjing to suppress it. In order to safeguard their own interests, foreign invaders also violently interfered openly in the revolution. Britain, France and the United States joined forces to build a wall between Shanghai City and the Concession to cut off the supplies of the Small Knife Club. Later, the troops of the foreign invaders attacked the rebels more directly with warships and artillery, and the rebels responded resolutely. In one battle, 13 French people were killed on the spot and more than 30 others were injured.

On February 17, 1855 (the first day of the first month of the fifth year of Xianfeng), the rebels were forced to break through. During the battle, Liu Lichuan, Zhou Xiuying, Xu Yao and others died. Some of the uprising troops led by Pan Qiliang entered the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and joined the Taiping Army. Other remnants of the encirclement and scattered in various places and continued to participate in the anti-Qing struggle. The Shanghai Small Knife Society Uprising failed at this point.
