He has served as president since 1940. After the expiration of his term, he resided in the United States. On March 10, 1952, a coup was launched, seized power and re-elected president. During his term, he repealed the 1940 Constitution, dissolved Congress, outlawed the Workers 'Union, and made Cuba fully subordinate to the United States. In January 1959, he was overthrown by the rebels led by Field Castro and went into exile until his death.
