On this day, 33 years ago, on October 14, 1992 (September 19, 1992, the lunar calendar), Russia released data on the Sakhalin Island air crash. On October 14, 1992, Russian President Yeltsin handed the South Korean delegation 12 documents related to the 1983 Sakhalin Island air disaster. Documents show that on August 31, 1983, a Korean civil flight Boeing 747 was shot down by a Soviet fighter jet over Sakhalin Island on its way from New York to Seoul. All 240 passengers and 29 crew members on board were killed. The documents transferred include all deciphered records of the "black box", reports from relevant units to Andropov, then General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and conclusions of expert groups from the Soviet Ministry of Defense, KGB, Ministry of Aviation and other units. Presidential Press Secretary Kostikov said that Russia cannot yet hand over the "black box" to Seoul.
