Works in poetry, literature, books, and painting, and is good at freehand brushwork of flowers and birds, and between mountains and rivers. He has deep cultivation in painting theory and appreciation of ancient paintings. He was a beginner in painting Jiang Nansha and Yun Nantian, and later he learned from Qingteng and the eight major artists. The calligraphy is elegant and simple. In 1932, he organized the "Baishe" painting fair with Pan Tianshou, Zhu Wenyun, Zhang Shuqi, and Zhang Zhenze, inherited the innovative spirit of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou", engaged in the research of poetry, books, and paintings, and held Baishe exhibitions in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Nanjing, Hangzhou and other places, and published a collection of Baishe paintings. In 1939, he went to Yunnan to serve as a professor at the National College of Art, and in August 1941, he was appointed as a professor of China Painting at the Fujian Provincial Teachers College. After liberation, he served as professor and director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and executive director of the Zhejiang Branch of the Artists Association. He is a member of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Democratic League. He is the author of "Introduction to China Painting","Ten Lectures on China Painting","Notes on Painting Theory","Essays on Painting Micro-Painting", etc. During the "Cultural Revolution", he wrote "The Picture of Hedge Chrysanthemum" and "The Pine Color Unwilling to Fall", which were falsely accused as "black paintings" and criticized, and died on July 26, 1977.
