On this day, 398 years ago, on January 24, 1627 (December 8, 1626, the lunar calendar), Tokugawa Chiki shaved her hair and became a nun. Tokugawa Chiki (May 26, 1597-March 11, 1666) was the eldest daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second-generation general of the Edo Shogun. Her mother was Chonggenin and was born in Fushami Castle. In the second year of her birth, Toyotomi Hideyoshi passed away. In accordance with Hideyoshi's last wish, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the son of Mrs. Niyoshi, was betrothed to his cousins. In 1603, after the war of Sekiharu, his grandfather Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed by the court as the general of the conquest of barbarians and founded the Edo shogunate. Then he married Chiki to Osaka Castle. Chiji married Osaka Castle for twelve years and had no children with Hideori. Instead, Hideori gave birth to a son and a daughter with a maid. During the Summer Battle of Osaka in 1615, before Osaka City was about to be captured, Chiki was rescued by Naomori Sakazaki, a general of the Tokugawa family. After fleeing back to the Tokugawa family, she asked her elders to spare the lives of Hideori and Mrs. Yodo. However, her wish was not fulfilled, and both Hideori and Mrs. Yodo finally committed suicide. In the end, only the life of Shurayi's daughter was saved. Shurayi's daughter later adopted Chiji as her adoptive mother, and was forced by Tokugawa to become a nun, known as Shurayi. In 1616, Tokugawa Ieyasu passed away. At this time, Chiki had been widowed for a year and remarried to Honta Tada-ku as his wife under the arrangement of her family. Bundo Zhongke's mother, Xiong Ji, is the daughter of Yasuo's eldest son, Nobu Matsuhira, so Qianji's marriage to Zhongke was also a close marriage. In 1617, Hondo was transferred from Ise to Himeji, and Chiji also moved to Himeji City, so she was called "Himeji", and the shogunate also gave her 100,000 stones as makeup expenses. In 1618, she gave birth to her eldest daughter, Katsuji, and in 1619, her eldest son, Yuchiyo. This kind of life should have been very happy, but Yuchiyo died in 1621. Five years later, in May 1626, Zhongke, who was only thirty years old, also died. Unfortunately, there is not only that. In June of the same year, Zhong Ke's mother Xiong Ji passed away; in September, Qian Ji's mother Xiao Du also passed away. After this series of unfortunate incidents, Chiki returned to Edo Castle with her daughter Katsuki. On December 6 of that year (January 24, 1627), she shaved her hair and became a nun, known as Tianshuin. After Chiji became a monk, she lived together with Seung-ji. The mother and daughter were placed in the Takeda Imperial Hall and received 10,000 stones as living expenses. However, in 1628, Katsuhie was arranged to marry Mitsuma Ikeda, the lord of the Toriha clan, and Chisuhie lived alone in Edo. In 1644, Mrs. Axia, the side room of General Tokugawa Iemitsu, gave birth to a son, Toramitsu (Tokugawa Tsunami). However, it is said that the child born at the age of 41 was unlucky, so she gave Toramitsu to Chiji for adoption. In 1666, Chiki passed away in Edo and was buried in Koishikawa Chuanyuin (located in present-day Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo). The name was "The Honorary Source of Tianshuin Matsuyama Sister".
