On August 17, 1993 (June 30th of the lunar calendar), mathematician Feng Kang passed away.

Feng Kang (September 9, 1920-August 17, 1993) was a mathematician, applied mathematics and computational mathematician. A pioneer in modern computational mathematics research in China. Born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, he lived in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province as a boy and was originally born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. China is the founder and academic leader of the disciplines of computational mathematics and scientific engineering computing. In 1980, he was elected as an academician of the China Academy of Sciences (member of the Faculty).

From 1926 to 1937, he studied in the experimental primary school, junior high school and senior high school affiliated to Suzhou Middle School in Jiangsu Province. In 1939, he was admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Central University (renamed Nanjing University in 1949). Two years later, he transferred to the Department of Physics, majoring in the three main courses of Electrical Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics. In 1944, he graduated from Central University in Chongqing. He taught at Tsinghua University in 1946. He has worked at the Institute of Computing Technology of the China Academy of Sciences since 1951. During this period, he studied at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Soviet Union from 1951 to 1953, and served as an associate researcher and researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology of the China Academy of Sciences from 1957 to 1978. From 1978 to 1987, he served as director of the Computing Center of the China Academy of Sciences, and after 1987, he served as honorary chairman of the center. Independently created the finite element method, natural transformation and natural boundary element method, opening up a new field of research on symplectic geometry and symplectic schemes. He passed away on August 17, 1993.
