Victory at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954
On this day, 71 years ago, May 7, 1954 (April 5, 1954, the Lunar Calendar), the Battle of Dien Bien Phu was won. On May 7, 1954, the Vietnam people won the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. In 1953, Vietnam achieved a series of victories in the war against France. In order to salvage the defeat, French commander-in-chief Navar formulated the "Navar Plan" in an attempt to concentrate mobile forces and regain the military initiative within 18 months. In November, the French army dropped more than 5,000 paratroopers, occupied Dien Bien Phu, gathered heavy troops, and established a group as a base for invading the Jiefang District. In December, the Vietnamese army launched an offensive to liberate Laizhou and encircle Dien Bien Phu. The Central Committee of the Workers 'Party of Vietnam decided to fight a decisive battle in Dien Bien Phu. On March 13, 1954, the Vietnam People's Army launched an attack on Dien Bien Phu. After 55 days and nights of fighting, Dien Bien Phu was liberated on May 7, wiped out more than 16,000 enemy troops, captured French commander Dycatelli, uprooted the last fortress of the French colonial army in northwest Vietnam, and shattered the "Nawar Plan." During the winter and spring battles of 1953- 1954, the Vietnamese army wiped out a total of 110,000 enemy troops, forcing France to sign the "Geneva Agreement" on restoring peace in Indochina on July 27, 1954.
