On February 11, 2008 (January 5, 2008 in the lunar calendar), a fire broke out in Chongli Gate, the first national treasure in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The Chonglimen Pavilion, located on 4th Street, Namdaemun, Central District, Seoul, was built in 1395. It is the oldest wooden building in Seoul and a landmark ancient building in Seoul. The lower end of the gate is a stone city wall doorway, and the upper end is a double-layered wooden gate tower. A 70-year-old man surnamed Cai arrested by the Seoul Namdaemun Police Department on Ganghwa Island in Gyeonggi Province on the 11th has admitted setting fire to Chongli Gate. Police said that Cai climbed onto Chongli Gate at about 8:50 pm on the 10th. The attic on the second floor of Chongli Gate, sprinkled flammable substances and set fire to the first and second floors of the attic. In April 2006, Cai was sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment with suspended execution for setting fire to the Wenzheng Hall of Changjing Palace causing 4 million won in losses. At that time, Cai claimed that all land development compensation was not adequate and committed a crime.
