Australia, located between the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, consists of mainland Australia and islands such as Tasmania. It covers an area of 7.6823 million square kilometers. The population was 18.05 million (1995). 95% are descendants of immigrants from the UK and other European countries. The residents mainly believe in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism.

Australia's economy is dominated by agriculture and animal husbandry, mining and manufacturing. It is one of the developed countries. It mainly exports iron ore, wool, aluminum, wheat, beef and mutton, sugar, coal; imports clothing, automobiles, electrical appliances, etc.

Australia was originally inhabited by indigenous people. Britain declared it a colony in 1770. The first batch of immigrants settled in Sydney in 1788, and January 26 of that year was later designated as Australia's National Day.
