On January 17, 1922, Huang Ai and Pang Renquan, leaders of the Hunan Labor Union and Changsha labor leaders, were killed.
Huang Ai,(1897-1922), formerly known as the authentic product, was Jianzhong, a leader of the Hunan Workers 'Movement and a revolutionary martyr. In March 10, the workers of Hunan's No. 1 Yarn Factory were mobilized to organize large-scale demonstrations twice. Zhao Hengti sent military police to surround the Labor Union and arrested Huang Ai and Pang Renquan. Without trial, he was killed outside Liuyang Gate in the early morning of the 17th. He was 25 years old at the time. The body was buried in public on Yuelu Mountain.
Pang Renquan (1897-1922) was born in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, also known as Shouchun. One of the leaders of the Hunan Workers 'Movement. Graduated from the A Industrial School of Hunan Province in 1917. In 1920, he and Huang Ai jointly organized the Hunan Labor Union in Changsha, served as director of the publishing department, and established a new female worker crew. In 1921, he wrote new dramas such as "The Thief of Humanity","Money Evil" and "Social Gospel". At the same time, he led workers 'strikes through the Labor Union. He joined the Socialist Youth League at the end of 1921. On January 17, 1922, he and Huang Ai were killed in Changsha by Hunan warlord Zhao Hengti.
The deaths of martyrs Huang and Pang shocked the Hunan labor community and aroused strong reactions among workers across the country. When Mao Zedong learned of the murder of Huang Ai and Pang Renquan, he immediately returned to Changsha City from the home of Yang Kaihui in Banchang. He held a meeting at the home of Yi Peiji, the principal of the First Division, and decided to launch a movement to commemorate Huang Ai and Pang Renquan and accuse and resist Zhao Hengti. Later, he hosted two memorial services for Huang Ai and Pang Renquan at Chuanshan Society, and issued a special commemorative issue. At the same time, Li Lisan, who was in Anyuan, was sent to Changde to mobilize Huang Ai's father to go to Shanghai to accuse Zhao Hengti of his atrocities. The Secretariat of the Labor Organization of China called them "the first martyrs of China who died for the proletariat."
On May 1, 1922, the First National Labor Conference unanimously decided that January 17 of each year would be the anniversary of the martyrdom of Huang and Pang. Zhou Enlai wrote the poem "Life and Death" in France, praising them for "being Lu (Semenburg) and Li (Kaknesi) of China." Li Dazhao's "Preface to the Blood of Huang and Pang" pointed out: "Mr. Huang and Pang used their blood to write a new era for us.』
