105 years ago today, on March 22, 1920 (February 3, 1920, the famous Japanese female scientist Katsuko Sukuhashi was born. The famous Japanese female scientist Satsuko Sakuhashi (March 22, 1920-September 29, 2007) was a Japanese geochemist who made certain first measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the level of seawater, and then showed evidence of the harm of radioactive dust in seawater and the atmosphere. Katsuko Sakuhashi was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Imperial School of Women's Sciences at the University of Tokyo in 1943 (formerly known as Toho University, now renamed Imperial University). She then joined the Meteorological Institute of the Central Meteorological Observatory (later the Japan Meteorological Agency) and worked in its Geochemical Laboratory. In 1950, she began to study the levels of CO2 in seawater. At the time, CO2 levels were not seen as important, and Katsuko Saruhashi had to develop methods to measure themselves. She received her doctorate in chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1957, becoming the first woman to do so. She died of pneumonia at her home in Tokyo on September 29, 2007. She is 87 years old. The results of the Bikini Atoll nuclear test After the Bikini Atoll nuclear test in 1954, the Japanese government required the Geochemical Laboratory to conduct analysis and monitor radioactivity in seawater and rainwater. A Japanese fishing boat came down from testing during an accident, injuring its residents. Katsuko Suhashi discovered that it would take a year and a half for radioactive material to reach Japan in seawater. By 1964, radioactivity levels showed that the waters of the western and eastern Pacific were completely mixed, and by 1969, traces of radioactivity had spread throughout the Pacific. These are the first studies to show how radiation effects can spread throughout the world, rather than just affecting immediate areas. Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, she turned her attention to learning about acid rain and its effects. Awards and honors 1958-Established the Japan Association of Women Scientists to promote women in science's participation in world peace. 1979-Executive Director of the Geochemical Laboratory. 1980-Elected as the first woman to the Japan Science Council. 1981-Received the Avon Women's Special Award for research on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and improving the status of female scientists. 1981-The Saruhashi Award is established, awarded to one female scientist every year, providing a role model for young female scientists. 1985-First woman to receive the Miyake Geochemistry Award. 1993-Won the field prize from the Marine Science Association. Katsuko Saruhashi is an honorary member of the Japan Geochemical Society and the Japan Oceanographic Society. On March 22, 2018, Google showed Doodle in recognition of Katsuko Saruhashi on her 98th birthday.
