Later, he was arrested on the crime of "conspiracy" and sentenced to death in prison. In the 21st year of Kangxi (1682), Chen Menglei was rescued by Xu Qianxue, Minister of the Ministry of Punishment, and was transferred to Shangyang Fort in Fengtian (now Liaoning Province). After arriving at the garrison, Chen fell ill; his father and mother died one after another; his wife also died in the exile place. Chen Menglei was extremely sad, but he still couldn't hold the book in his hands and studied and wrote hard. In the 17th year of Fengtian, he taught and wrote, and successively compiled "A Brief Introduction of the Book of Changes","Shengjing Tongzhi","Annals of Chengde County","Annals of Haicheng County","Annals of Gaiping County", etc. In September of the 37th year of Kangxi (1698), Kangxi inspected Shengjing (now Shenyang). Chen Menglei presented a poem stating his will and was recalled to the capital. The following year, he entered the Inner Garden and served Prince Cheng Yinzhi (the third son of Kangxi) to study. Because of his dedication to his duties, he is very fond of his subordinates. In the 40th year of Kangxi (1701), he was appointed to editor-in-chief of "The Collection of Ancient and Modern Books". It took five years to compile a book in May of the 44th year of Kangxi. The large-scale genre "Collection of Ancient and Modern Books" has a total of 10,000 volumes and a catalog of 40 volumes. It is divided into 6 parts: Calendar, Fangyu, Mingyi, Natural History, Neo-Confucianism, and Economics. Each part is divided into several classics, and the book has a total of 32 classics; each scripture is divided into cadres, with a total of 6109 books in the book. The book has rich content and detailed distinctions. After its publication, it was well received by all parties. Zhang Tingyu, a native of the Qing Dynasty, said: "Since the beginning of the book contract, one book has spanned ancient and modern times, covering everything, and there is no such thing as the Collection of Ancient and Modern Books of our dynasty. Foreign scholars praised the book as the "Kangxi Encyclopedia". In the sixty-first year of Kangxi (1722), Kangxi died and his fourth son Yinzhen succeeded him. After Yin Zhen ascended the throne, Yin Zhi was demoted for making mistakes, and Chen Menglei was implicated. In January of the first year of Yongzheng (1723), he was once again exiled to Heilongjiang, when Chen Menglei was 72 years old. Yongzheng ordered Jiang Tingxi, the official of the Jingyan and Minister of Revenue, to recompile and revise the finalized "Collection of Ancient and Modern Books", remove Chen Menglei's name and replace it with Jiang Tingxi.
