Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The Battle of Stalingrad ended on February 2, 1943
On this day, 82 years ago, on February 2, 1943 (December 28, 1942 in the lunar calendar), the Battle of Stalingrad ended. During the Battle of Stalingrad, my mother kissed goodbye to her children who had gone to the battlefield. The world-renowned Battle of Stalingrad was an unprecedented battle in the Second World War. The battle lasted about 160 days, and the Soviet and German sides put into action. The number of troops in combat reached more than 2 million. The battle ended in complete defeat for the German army. Stalingrad (now known as Volgograd) is located in the lower reaches of the Volga River and about 60 kilometers east of the Great Bend of the Don River. It is the political, economic and cultural center and land and water transportation hub of the southeastern region of the European part of the Soviet Union. It is also an important military industrial base and oil transfer station. On July 17, 1942, the German army launched an offensive on the bend of the Don River, and the great Battle of Defense of Stalingrad began. The German army launched a continuous onslaught in an attempt to break through the Don River line, while the Soviet army launched a tenacious counterattack. On August 23, the German army paid a heavy price before breaking through the Don River defense line, crossing the bend of the Don River, and began to directly attack Stalingrad. At this critical juncture, the Soviet Supreme Command ordered the city's garrison to take all measures to hold their positions and eliminate the enemy approaching the Volga River. Under the heroic sniper attacks of the Soviet military and civilians, the German army's spirit was severely damaged. It was not until September 13 that the German army entered the city of Stalingrad, and the two sides began a more intense battle for the Urban area. In order to occupy this famous city, the German army transferred a large number of troops and aircraft from the Caucasus to carry out strong attacks and repeated bombings. However, the heroic Soviet soldiers and civilians defended every inch of the motherland with their lives and blood. In the nearly two-month battle for Stalingrad, the Soviet Army repelled more than 700 German charges, making it impossible for the German army to capture the city. The war continued into mid-November, and the German army was in a dilemma. The Soviet army's active defensive tactics once again shattered Hitler's aggressive plan and bought time for the Soviet army to carry out a comprehensive counterattack. Due to the heavy German casualties, the Soviet Army began to surpass the German Army in terms of strength and weapons and equipment. In this situation, the Soviet Supreme Command decided to organize forces to launch a counterattack. At dawn on November 19, 1942, the Soviet Army began a major counterattack and launched an attack on the German positions. On the night of the 22nd, the Soviet Army successfully crossed the Don River. On the 23rd, several Soviet forces joined forces in Karachi and formed a siege of the German Sixth Army under the city of Stalingrad. On January 10, 1943, the Soviet Army fired 50 cannons at the enemy in the encirclement. The German army began to collapse. The Soviet command ordered the besieged German troops to surrender, but was refused. On January 22, the Soviet Army launched another full-scale offensive. Paulus, commander of the German Sixth Group, asked Hitler to surrender when he was running out of ammunition and food, but was not agreed. In order to cheer up Paulus, Hitler ordered on the 30th to be awarded the rank of Marshal Paulus and to reward the 117 officers of the Sixth Army with one rank promotion each. However, no matter how Hitler promoted his official position, he could not save the German army's defeat. On February 2, the Soviet Army captured more than 90,000 German troops and wiped out all the 330,000 German troops trapped. The world-shaking Battle of Stalingrad ended here. The German army suffered approximately 1.5 million casualties in the battle, accounting for 1/4 of its total strength fighting on the Soviet-German battlefield. The Soviet victory in Stalingrad had a huge impact on the Soviet-German battlefield and even on the entire process of World War II. The Battle of Stalingrad was a fundamental turning point in the Soviet-German battlefield and a decisive turning point in the Second World War.
