Birth of Darwin, founder of the theory of evolution

Darwin

February 12, 1809 was the birthday of Darwin, the great British biologist and founder of the theory of evolution. Every year on this day, people in various countries around the world hold commemorative activities for it.

Darwin was born into a family of generations of doctors in Sherapshire, western England. His father Varning sent him to Edinburgh University to study medicine, hoping that he would become a famous doctor and inherit the family business in the future. But Darwin had no interest in medicine and became inseparable from natural history and mineralogy. In 1831, on the recommendation of Professor Hanslow, young Darwin had the opportunity to participate in the five-year global expedition of the Beagle ship as a natural scientist. In Darwin's own words, these five years of inspection were a major event that determined his entire career. During these five years, he traveled across mountains and rivers and entered deep mountains and forests. The strange flowers and plants, rare birds and beasts, and the strange mutations of nature attracted his whole heart. He began to preach to the Bible that "all kinds of creatures were created by God, and the species are unchanged." He began to have doubts. In the end, we finally abandoned the preaching that species remain unchanged with the bold assumption that "species change gradually."

In order to avoid prejudice and find more basis for his theory, he was so focused that he even forgot his marriage. He not only carefully sorted out various variation facts that could be collected in nature, but also extensively collected various variation facts of animals raised at home. After consulting a large number of books and materials, he finally published an epoch-making masterpiece-"The Origin of Species" on November 24, 1859. Marx said that this book actually provided a "natural scientific basis" for class struggle in history.

Darwin was an outstanding scientist. His epoch-making contributions opened up new and broad prospects for the development of human science. Therefore, after his death on April 19, 1882, people buried him in order to express their respect for him. Next to the tomb of Newton, another great figure in the scientific world, he enjoys the highest honor of a natural scientist.
