On February 10, 1907, China surveyed the first oil well
118 years ago today, February 10, 1907 (December 28, 1906 in the lunar calendar), China surveyed the first oil well. In February 1907, the first oil well in China was surveyed outside the west gate of Yanchang County, Shaanxi Province. Since the official discovery of oil deposits in China in 1903, no one has carried out modern mining. In 1904, Yanchang County allocated funds to establish the Yanchang Petroleum Official Factory, with alternate magistrate Hong Yang as the chief manager and began to extract oil. In order to carry out large-scale mining, Hong Yang hired Japanese technicians such as Yasuichiro Sato and Kuzo Tanaka at high salaries to purchase drilling and production machines, and served as technical guidance in surveying well locations and installing drilling rigs. Once the well location is surveyed, the Otai machine will be installed in April, drilling will be started with standard bits on June 5, and oil will be seen on September 6. The history of no oil production in the mainland of China has ended.
