Saran is the leader of the secret army organization, or O-A-S, and is now being held in a prison in Paris. He was arrested in Algeria yesterday, dealing a devastating blow to the terrorist organization. The group has killed and maimed hundreds of people in Algeria and France. Saran was the last of the four generals to be arrested. The four were arrested after Algeria led an attempted military coup against President Charles de Gaulle. Two of the four generals, Maurice Schall and Andrew Zeller, were arrested last year and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Edmond Jouot, the second-most-ranked figure in the secret army after Saran, was sentenced to death last week by a jury of civilian and military officials. This decision cannot be appealed. While Saran was still hiding in Algeria, he was sentenced to death. But under French law, he must be retried. The court is scheduled to start next month.
