On this day, 28 years ago, on May 10, 1997 (April 4, 1997 in the lunar calendar), a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in northeastern Iran. At 12:28 on May 10, 1997, a strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred in northeastern Iran, killing more than 2000 people, injuring more than 5000 people, and damaging 150 villages, 80% of which were seriously damaged. The epicenter was in eastern Iran, near the Afghan border, in the Garn and Birjand regions. This is the third strong earthquake in Iran this year. The most recent earthquake occurred in northwest Iran on February 28, killing 965 people.
