A 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in northeastern Iran on May 10, 1997
On this day, 28 years ago, on May 10, 1997 (April 4, 1997 in the lunar calendar), a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in northeastern Iran. At 12:28 on May 10, 1997, a strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred in northeastern Iran, killing more than 2000 people, injuring more than 5000 people, and damaging 150 villages, 80% of which were seriously damaged. The epicenter was in eastern Iran, near the Afghan border, in the Garn and Birjand regions. This is the third strong earthquake in Iran this year. The most recent earthquake occurred in northwest Iran on February 28, killing 965 people. After the earthquake, the Iranian government, the Red Crescent Society and humanitarian agencies composed of volunteers immediately dispatched a large number of rescue workers and set up tens of thousands of tents in the desert in the disaster area to accommodate the victims. On the day of the earthquake, the Iraqi Emergency Committee led by the President dispatched four C-130 transport aircraft to transport emergency relief supplies to the disaster area; six helicopters flew to the scene to quickly transport the victims to safe areas. China President Jiang Zemin sent a message to Iranian President Rafsanjani on the 11th, expressing deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred in northeastern Iran on May 10, causing heavy casualties and serious property losses.
