An independent Socialist newspaper stated: "The new government is responsible for their bloodshed. The German proletariat will try them. The government promised a full investigation, and the officers guarding the two prisoners were later imprisoned. Luxembourg was knocked unconscious by a group after the army tried to take her away from the Eden Hotel, where she had been interrogated. Then someone shot her in the head. And threw her into the canal, and her body has never been found. Liebknecht's guards did their best to drive him out of the confusion. A report says they brutally murdered him a few moments later. The guards said they fired when Liebknecht tried to escape.
