In January 1919, Sinn Finne, who won the election, convened the Irish National Assembly and announced the establishment of the Republic of Ireland. De Valera, who was still in prison, was elected president. Britain refused to recognize the Republic of Ireland. Thus, the anti-British guerrilla war broke out (1919 - 1921). On December 21, 1948, it was announced that it would leave the British Commonwealth. On April 18, 1949, Britain admitted its love for independence. De Valera, leader of Ireland's struggle for independence, politician, and President of the Republic (1959 - 1973). Born in New York in 1882, he graduated from Royal University in 1904, and later devoted himself to political activities and participated in the 1916 Easter Uprising.
