January 18, 1862: U.S. President John Taylor died
163 years ago today, January 18, 1862 (December 19, 1861, the lunar calendar), U.S. President John Taylor passed away. John Tyler (March 29, 1790-January 18, 1862) was the 10th President of the United States (April 6, 1841-March 4, 1846) and was born in Virginia. Taylor studied law when he was young. Elected to the Virginia Legislature many times. Later, he served as a member of the U.S. Congress, governor, and senator. Resigned from the Senate in 1836. In 1804, he was nominated by the Whig Party as a vice presidential candidate and was elected. President-elect Harrison died a month after taking office, and Taylor took over as president. Taylor's administration achieved great success: reforming the U.S. Navy, establishing the U.S. Weather Service, ending the Second Seminole War in Florida, quelling multiple rebellions in Rhode Island, and consolidating Texas. During his tenure, the United States signed the first unequal treaty with China, the China-US Wangsha Treaty. Through this treaty, the United States obtained privileges such as treaty tariffs, five-port trade, consular adjudication, and most-favored-nation treatment. In 1844 he withdrew from the election. In the early days of the American Civil War, he supported the separatist actions of the South and was elected as a member of Congress for the "Confederate Alliance". The northern states hated him very much. When he died on January 18, 1862, the federal government showed no condolences.
