151 years ago today, on February 15, 1874 (December 29, 1873 in the lunar calendar), British Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton was born. Ernest Shackleton (February 15, 1874-January 5, 1922) was a British Antarctic explorer born in County Kidder, Ireland. He is famous for his experience leading the "Hunter" to the South Pole from 1907 to 1909 and leading the "Endurance" to the Antarctic expedition from 1914 to 1916. After he was 15 years old, he announced that he wanted to live at sea. With the help and encouragement of his parents, he was awarded a decent position as a cabin attendant. His life at sea began in 1890. He spent four years as an apprentice at sea. In 1898, he obtained his captain's license at the age of 24 and joined the Royal Geographical Society in 1899. In early 1901, they joined the expedition led by Robert Scott and boarded the Antarctic exploration ship Discovery. They set off on July 23. On February 3, 1903, they failed to return from 460 miles (about 850 kilometers) from the South Pole. Shackleton himself organized and led the British Antarctic Expedition (1907-1909). Arriving at the Antarctic coast on the expedition ship "Hunter". On January 9, 1909, they made a final sprint to the Antarctic.
