July 31, 1971: The first human lunar rover made its journey
On this day, 54 years ago, July 31, 1971 (June 10, 1971 in the lunar calendar), humans made their first lunar rover. David Scott and James Owen became the world's first astronauts to drive on the moon. On July 31, 1971, Apollo 15 astronauts Davis R Scott and James B. Owen carried out the first human lunar rover. They drove a four-wheeled lunar rover and traveled several kilometers over craters and gravel on the rugged lunar surface. Scott and Owen became the seventh and eighth people to walk on the moon, and the first to drive on the moon. They landed on the moon's "Rain Sea" on the 30th and separated from the "Falcon" lunar module at 9:25 am EDT on the 31st. A few minutes later, they unloaded the moonlift from the spacecraft and began their exploration trip. The front rudder wheel of the traveling block is not working well, but according to design, only the rear wheel is driven and the rear drive wheel is running well. As the astronauts stopped on the edge of El Bau Crater, mission control in Houston turned on the rover's TV camera to send very clear color images to Earth. Television viewers can watch astronauts selecting and collecting moonstone specimens. Once, they shouted excitedly,"Here are some beautiful rocks for geological research." They drove for two hours, walked 8 kilometers, and then returned to the lunar module. According to the plan, Scott and Owen will drive the Lunar Car to do more travel in the next two days. They will join Alfred M. Wharton, another Apollo 15 astronaut on the command ship, and return together. "Moon Car", a lunar desert car, rides alone on the moon
