In 1921, she and Gramsci founded the Italian Communist Party in Livorno. She was arrested by the fascist regime in July 1930 and was not freed until after the fall of the fascist regime. After the end of World War II, Lavela resumed political activities within the Communist Party. She was elected to the House of Representatives from the first Congress until 1958, and was designated a life senator by the President in 1982.
