After the Battle of Jinzhong in July 1948, the First Corps of the North China Field Army of the People's Liberation Army, the Seventh Column of the Jinsui Military Region and the three independent brigades of the Jinzhong Military Region, totaling more than 80,000 people, took advantage of the victory and marched on Taiyuan. After the Battle of Pingjin, a general attack on Taiyuan was launched on April 20, 1949. On the 22nd, all surrounding strongholds were cleared.
