On February 8, 2001, with the approval of the Supreme People's Court, the largest counterfeit currency case since the founding of New China, the seven main criminals in the extremely large counterfeit currency case in Shanwei, Guangdong, were taken to the execution ground locally. Criminals committed rampant crimes in four years, printing counterfeit money totaling more than 600 million yuan. From May 1995 to June 1999, seven lawbreakers, Zhuo Zhenyuan, Zhuo Lianmao, Zhang Zetang, Zhou Jiadong, Zhang Linqi, Wen Zhiwu, and Zhang Xitao carried out criminal activities of printing counterfeit RMB in Lufeng, Puning and other places in Guangdong in order to seek illegal benefits, with a total amount of more than 600 million yuan printed in counterfeit currency. Among them, Zhuo Zhenyuan participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB 6 times, printing more than RMB 615 million; Zhuo Lianmao participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB 3 times, printing more than RMB 295 million; Zhang Zetang participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB once, printing more than RMB 271 million; Zhou Jiadong participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB 5 times, printing more than 338 million yuan of counterfeit RMB; Zhang Linqi participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB 2 times, printing more than 24 million yuan of counterfeit RMB; Wen Zhiwu participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB 3 times, printing more than 156 million yuan of counterfeit RMB; Zhang Xitao participated in the printing of counterfeit RMB once, printing more than 139 million yuan of counterfeit RMB. The Intermediate People's Court of Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, publicly heard the case and issued a first-instance judgment in September last year, sentencing Zhuo Zhenyuan, Zhuo Lianmao, Zhang Zetang, Zhou Jiadong, Zhang Linqi, Wen Zhiwu and Zhang Xitao to death, deprived of political rights for life, and confiscated property; At the same time, five other co-criminals were also sentenced to life imprisonment or fixed-term imprisonment of more than 10 years for the crimes of counterfeiting currency, purchasing counterfeit currency, and transporting counterfeit currency, and were also sentenced to confiscation of property or a fine of RMB 100,000. After the verdict was pronounced, Zhuo Zhenyuan and seven other seven who were sentenced to death refused to accept the verdict and filed an appeal. After hearing the case, the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province issued a ruling in December last year, rejecting the appeals of Zhuo Zhenyuan and other seven people, upholding the original judgment, and submitting it to the Supreme People's Court for approval in accordance with the law. After review, the Supreme People's Court held that Zhuo Zhenyuan and other seven people forged RMB with each other or together with others, which all constituted the crime of counterfeiting currency, and all played a major role in this case, and were all principal offenders. The amount of counterfeit currency is extremely large and the crimes are extremely serious. There are no statutory mitigating circumstances and all should be punished in accordance with the law. After discussion by the Trial Committee, the Supreme People's Court issued a ruling on February 6, 2001 approving the death penalty in the case. The person in charge of the Supreme People's Court emphasized that counterfeiting currency is an economic crime that seriously endangers national economic security and social stability. The extremely serious counterfeit currency case in Shanwei, Guangdong is the largest counterfeit currency case since the founding of New China. It is also one of the cases handed down the heaviest penalties and the most severe crackdown by the People's Court. Such criminal activities that seriously undermine normal economic order must be resolutely severely punished in accordance with the law to ensure the smooth progress of my country's reform, opening up, and economic construction.
