On August 8, 1973, Kim Dae-jung was kidnapped
52 years ago today, August 8, 1973 (July 10, 1973 in the lunar calendar), Kim Dae-jung was kidnapped. Kim Dae-jung was born on December 3, 1925 in Wu 'an County, Jeolla Province. In 1963, he was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Democratic Party, in 1965, he was appointed as the Propaganda Director of the People's Party, and in 1967, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Propaganda Committee of the New People's Party. In April 1971, he was elected as the presidential candidate of the New People's Party, proposing social democratization, North-South exchanges, and peaceful reunification in South Korea. He opposed Park Chung-hee's dictatorship and was monitored and persecuted for this and was forced to go into exile in the United States and Japan. In order to prevent Kim Dae-jung from carrying out activities against Park Chung-hee's regime in Japan, on August 8, 1973, several South Korean Central Intelligence Department agents calling themselves the National Salvation Alliance Operation kidnapped Kim Dae-jung in Tokyo, Japan, and escorted him back to South Korea. After the incident, the south Korean authorities, under pressure from domestic and foreign public opinion, released Kim Dae-jung and announced that as long as Kim Dae-jung no longer had "anti-state" words and deeds, he would not be held accountable. Kim Dong-jeok, First Secretary of the South Korean Embassy in Japan, was implicated and removed from office. South Korean Prime Minister went to Japan to apologize to the Japanese government for the incident.
