He was born in Cheng'an County, Hebei Province on April 29, 1894, and died in Yinchuan, Ningxia on January 30, 1977. Graduated from the Institute of Geology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce in 1916. He used to be a researcher at the Institute of Geology, Academia Sinica, captain of Hubei Provincial Mineral Survey Team, director of Hebei Construction Department, chief engineer of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology Bureau of Ministry of Geology, chief geological engineer of Survey and Design Administration of Ministry of Water Resources, deputy chief engineer of Hydropower Construction Administration, etc. In his early years, Li Jie was engaged in regional geological and mineral investigation in North China, northern Hubei, southern Henan and southern Shaanxi. He was the earliest host of the excavation of Peking Man in Zhoukoudian. In 1927, he wrote the Fossil Layer of Zhoukoudian and other articles. In the 1930s, he successively conducted geological and mineral surveys in Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces. It has contributed to the development of early geological undertakings in China. In his article Preliminary Study of Quaternary Glaciers in Western Hubei (1940), he divided the ice age in the mountainous areas of western Hubei, which is still used today. After 1949, he was mainly engaged in engineering geological work in water conservancy and electric power construction, and made contributions to the construction of many reservoirs, dams and hydropower stations in China. His main works include: Geology and Mineral Resources of Yi, Tang and Wei Counties in Zhili (1919), Geology of the Southern Middle Qinling Mountains (co-author, 1930), Geology Near Huangjinsi in Luocheng, Guangxi (co-author, 1936) and Quaternary Glacier Relics in Sanmenxia, Shanxian County, Henan Province (1959), etc.
