On this day, 72 years ago, May 2, 1953 (March 19, 1953 in the lunar calendar), Jordan's third King Hussein ascended the throne. Hussein was born in Amman on November 14, 1935 and studied in Egypt and the United Kingdom. He succeeded to the throne on August 11, 1952. On May 2, 1953, he officially ascended the throne and became King of the Hashemite Dynasty of Jordan, concurrently serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Sea, Land and Air Force. In March 1956, British General John Grubb, who had been in power in Jordan, was dismissed as Chief of Staff of the Jordanian Army. In April 1957, all political parties were dissolved. In February 1958, he and King Faisal of Iraq decided to form an "Arab Federation" between the two countries to counter the unity of Egypt and Syria. In September 1970, Jordanian troops were ordered to attack Palestinian guerrilla positions and refugee camps. In July 1971, they again suppressed the activities of the PLO guerrillas in Jordan. At the Seventh Arab Summit held in Rabat in November 1974, the PLO was recognized as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. He is the author of autobiographies such as "Worrying about the Country and the People" and "I Look at the War with Israel".
