On January 24, 1958, British and American scientists successfully collided two light atoms, creating a third, heavier atom, which generated greater heat. When the temperature of these atoms rises to 100 million degrees, which is the temperature when a hydrogen bomb explodes, nuclear fusion can occur. Sir John Coccroft of the United Kingdom and Lewis Strauss of the United States announced the groundbreaking research.
