Eighty years ago today, on March 23, 1945 (February 10, 1945 in the lunar calendar), the US military crossed the Rhine River. The United States discovers the Rudendorff Bridge on the Rhine River that has not yet been blown up On March 23, 1945, the American bluff and luck greatly helped our soldiers cross the Rhine River for the first time in the Great War. When Admiral Omar Bradley received the unexpected news, he immediately sent additional troops to Remagen. The U.S. military crossed the Rhine River for the first time at this place the night before. The crossing time is approximately 10:30 p.m. Lieutenant Colonel Carl Timmerman, commander of the I Corps 'Panzer Division under General Hozies, led his troops across the Eiffre Plateau, east of the newly fought Ardennes Battlefield, to Remagen. This small town is on the Rhine River, between Cologne and Kobrenz. Just as another force was trying to build a bridgehead over a small river, Timmerman's men unexpectedly discovered that there was an intact bridge over the Rhine. This is the Ludendorff Bridge. Apparently, this was left behind by the Germans during their retreat. Timmerman asked to cross the bridge and was allowed. Suddenly Timmerman's troops dived into the water and took cover. It turned out that the Germans had planted booby traps under a bridge pier, and an explosion caused the bridge to make a cackling sound. However, the bridge miraculously survived. There was another loud noise, but the bridge body was still not destroyed. After Timmerman's men crossed the bridge, they found a tunnel across the river where many German soldiers and civilians were hiding, and they were all detained. Timmerman radioed news of the victory to headquarters. When Bradley heard the news, he immediately ordered all troops to take advantage of this opportunity to advance towards Remagen. The Allies needed more bridgeheads on the Rhine. Bradley's emotions were clearly elevated by Timmerman's rapid crossing of the Rijon River. He said his troops were able to cross the Rhine "at any time, anywhere." In the west of the Rhine, the Allies had just carried out General Eisenhower's order to annihilate all German troops. General Patton's tank troops captured Speyer, one of Germany's last strongholds in the region.
