Breaking-News >> TodayHistory February 11, 1929 Normalization of relations between the Holy See and Italy
96 years ago today, February 11, 1929 (January 2, 1929 in the lunar calendar), relations between the Holy See and Italy normalized. Since the unification and founding of Italy, the Roman Catholic Church has had an uneasy relationship with the Italian government and refused to accept the Italian government's 1871 papal guarantee law. On this day in 1929, the two sides signed the Rutland Agreement to normalize their relations. The agreement includes three agreements: the first agreement recognizes the Pope's rule over Vatican City and the summer palace outside the city, Castile Gandolfa; The second agreement was to compensate the Holy See for property losses incurred during the unification and founding of Italy (1859-1870), totaling 17.5 billion lire; the third agreement stipulated that Catholicism was the state religion of Italy, church property was exempt from tax, the government paid church salaries, and the monasteries were granted legal personality. The government also recognized the effect of canon law in marriage, and priests could teach religious courses in primary and secondary schools. This arrangement benefits both the government and the church. The Pope is no longer a "prisoner of the Vatican."
