On this day, 154 years ago, on April 21, 1871 (March 2, 1871, the lunar calendar), China educator Yang Changji was born. Yang Changji Yang Changji (1871-1920) ethicist and educator. Bancangchong at the foot of Yinju Mountain in Qingtaidu, Changsha County, Hunan Province, was born on April 21, 1871. After failing in the township examinations twice, he later set up a museum at home to teach apprentices. He often discussed state affairs with his close friend Yang Shouren, believing that "non-reform is not enough to survive." In 1898, he studied at Yuelu Academy. Despite the obstruction of the mountain chief, he resolutely joined the progressive group Southern Society, working hard to promote new learning and new policies, and agreed with Tan Sitong's political thought of "putting the people first". After the failed coup of 1898, he fled to his hometown and studied the study of the world. Whether it is studying knowledge or being a person, they all have a spirit of perseverance. He said: "I have no one who is extraordinary, but I work hard on the word perseverance and often want to win over time." This spirit of his is called "Dahua Zhai Method" by students and competed to imitate it. In the twenty-ninth year of Guangxu (1903), he traveled east to Japan to study abroad, majoring in education. In the first year of Xuantong (1909), he studied in Britain and specialized in philosophy and ethics. After 1913, he taught at Hunan Provincial Normal School, Fourth Normal School, First Normal School, Commercial College, and First Middle School. Support the New Culture Movement and promote the ideas of "New Youth". In June 1918, he was hired by Mr. Cai Yuanpei to serve as a professor of ethics at Peking University. He raised funds for students going to France on a work-study program, recommended Mao Zedong to work in the Peking University Library, and facilitated the marriage and love relationship between his beloved daughter Yang Kaihui and Mao Zedong. During the May 4th Movement, he published the article "Tell Students" to express his ardent expectations for young people, and participated in the launch of the Peking University Philosophy Research Association, writing an article calling on young people to dare to speak and do. Yang Changji cared about a group of progressive young people such as Mao Zedong, Cai Hesen, Xiao Zisheng, and Chen Chang, and encouraged them to "plant big trees and support the long sky." Support the establishment of the Xinmin Society and prepare for the establishment of Hunan University. On January 17, 1920, Yang Changji died of illness at the German Hospital in Beijing. He was buried in Bancang, Changsha County. Because he lived in Bancang for his time, Yang Changji was later called "Mr. Bancang" and "Bancang Yang". His works include "The Diary of Dahuazhai","Selected Works of Yang Changji","Persuasion of Learning" and other works, and have been translated into "The History of Western Ethics" and other books. He has published papers in "New Youth" and "Oriental Magazine", introducing Western philosophy, ethics, and education thoughts, and connecting them with domestic reality to advocate democracy and science, and promote new morality.
