On this day, 61 years ago, on February 29, 1964 (January 17, 1964 in the lunar calendar), Premier Zhou Enlai successfully concluded his friendly visit to 14 countries in Asia and Africa. In January 1964, during Zhou Enlai and Chen Yi's visit to Sudan, they accepted children to lay flowers while visiting the famous cotton area of Gizira. After 60 years, the international situation has changed. Mao Zedong proposed that the focus of our diplomatic work should be on striving for "two middle areas". The so-called "middle areas" refer to some developed capitalist countries in Europe that oppose U.S. control; the other refers to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. From December 14, 1963 to February 29, 1964, Zhou Enlai led a China delegation to conduct friendly visits to 14 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. Accompanying Zhou Enlai were Chen Yi, Kong Yuan, Huang Zhen, Tong Xiaopeng, Qiao Guanhua, etc. Zhou Enlai and his party visited 10 African countries including Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia and Albania, as well as three Asian countries including Myanmar, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). It lasted a total of 72 days and traveled 108,000 miles. Zhou Enlai's trip to Africa was the first official goodwill visit to an African country by a China leader. During his visit to Egypt, Zhou Enlai proposed five principles for the mutual relations between the China government and Arab and African countries based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Ten Principles of the Bandung Conference. The formulation of these principles is a pioneering undertaking for China in diplomacy. During his visit to Mali, Zhou Enlai put forward eight principles for China's foreign aid, which fully reflected China's sincere desire to carry out economic and cultural cooperation with the vast number of Asian and African countries. During his visit to Somalia, Zhou Enlai pointed out that "the entire African continent is a good revolutionary situation," Africa "has become an awakened, fighting, and advanced continent", and "an independent, prosperous and powerful new Africa must emerge" and other famous assertions. During his visit, Zhou Enlai held candid and friendly talks with government leaders of the countries he visited, exchanged views on international situation issues of common concern, enhanced mutual understanding and friendly relations with these countries, and issued joint communiqués of the talks. This visit has had a major and far-reaching impact on strengthening the unity and cooperation between China and the people of Asian and African countries, improving China's international status and prestige and safeguarding world peace.
