International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 21 March 1960
On this day 65 years ago, March 21, 1960 (February 24, 1960 lunar calendar), the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Black people demonstrate in front of the police near Johannesburg, South Africa. On March 21, 1960, the black people in Sharpeville, South Africa, held a large-scale demonstration against the racial discrimination decree of the South African racist regime - the "Pass Law". It was brutally suppressed and bloody massacres by the reactionary authorities. More than 80 people were shot dead and more than 300 were injured, causing a tragedy that shocked the world. In order to eliminate unreasonable racial discrimination and commemorate the unyielding black people of Sharpeville, on December 14, 1977, the United Nations passed a resolution to designate March 21 every year as the "International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination".
