On this day 118 years ago, on January 20, 1907 (December 7, 1906 lunar calendar), Chinese chemist Wang Baoren was born. Professor Wang Baoren was a native of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and a Chinese polymer synthesis and organic synthesis chemist. Born on January 20, 1907 in Jiangdu County, Jiangsu Province (now Yangzhou City), he died in Beijing on September 12, 1986. After graduating from the Department of Chemistry of Nanjing Southeast University in 1927, he stayed on to teach. He studied in England in 1933. In 1935, he received a doctorate from Imperial College, University of London. He was hired as a guest researcher at the Technical University of Munich. After returning to China in 1937, he served as a professor, head of the Department of Chemistry, and dean of the School of Science at Tongji University. In 1941, he served as a professor, head of the Department of Chemistry, and provost of Zhejiang University. In 1951, he served as a researcher and deputy director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1956, he served as a researcher and deputy director of the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1959, he served as a professor and deputy director of the Polymer Department of the University of Science and Technology of China. In 1981, he was elected as a member of the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1932, he participated in the establishment of the Chinese Chemical Society. He successively served as the executive director of the Chinese Chemical Society, the director of the Polymer Professional Committee, the director of the Chinese Chemical Society, and the vice chairperson of the Petrochemical Society.
