On February 3, 1795, Antonio Josde Sucre was born in a native white aristocratic family in Kumana, eastern Venezuela. At the age of 15, he joined the national liberation struggle. In 1811, after Venezuela declared its independence and established the First Republic, he fought to defend the Republic. In July 1812, the Republic was overthrown, and he went into exile to Trinidad to fight guerrilla warfare.
