The United Arab Republic was established on February 1, 1958
On this day 67 years ago, on February 1, 1958 (December 13, 1957 lunar calendar), Egypt united with Syria to become the United Arab Republic. The United Arab Republic ("UAE") is a pan-Arab state formed by Egypt and Syria on February 1, 1958. The original plan also included Iraq, but did not join because of the unstable situation. On March 8, 1958, the Kingdom of Mutawakilya (later the Yemen Arab Republic) of Yemen joined as a congregation, and the entire alliance was renamed the "United Arab States" (UnitedStatesofArabia). Due to Egypt's individual hegemonic policies, Syria announced its withdrawal on September 28, 1961, and North Yemen also withdrew in December, but Egypt retained the country name until 1972. 1.
