March 25, 1979 Ian Smith agrees to Rhodesian independence schedule
Forty-six years ago today, on March 25, 1979 (February 27, 1979), Ian Smith agreed to the Rhodesian Independence Calendar. Ian Smith agreed to the Independence Calendar. In March 1979, Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith, along with Chieftain Chirau, Bishop Muzoreva, and Sisol, agreed on a timetable for independence, agreeing to achieve final black rule by December 31, but in the meantime, the civil war continued. After failing to unilaterally declare independence for Rhodesia within the Commonwealth, the Smith government came under increasing pressure to reach an agreement with the moderate Zimbabwe African People's Union, led by Joshua Nkomo. By 1978, there were more than 6,000 people. Killed in a guerrilla war with the Zimbabwe African National Union Fighting Group commanded by Sisol. The Smith government and some nationalist leaders finally agreed to establish a transitional government that would include blacks and eventually achieve the goal of majority rule.
