January 13, 1878 Chen Jiongming, a Guangdong warlord, was born
On this day, 147 years ago, January 13, 1878 (December 11, 1877, the Cantonese warlord Chen Jiongming was born. Chen Jiongming (January 13, 1878-September 29, 1933), also known as Jingcun, was born in Haifeng, Guangdong. During the Republic of China, Guangdong's military and political leaders adhered to the political proposition of joint provincial autonomy throughout their lives and committed themselves to unifying China through peaceful consultations. This was inconsistent with Sun Yat-sen's political program of centralization and seeking to unify China at all costs. In the end, they parted ways and turned against each other, becoming controversial figures unpopular between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. After retiring to Hong Kong, he assisted in the transformation of Hong Men, the largest overseas Chinese community organization, into the Zhi Gong Party of China and was the first prime minister of the party. Later, he died of illness in Hong Kong and was buried in Ziwei Mountain on the bank of West Lake in Huizhou, Guangdong the following year. Chen Jiongming made great achievements during his administration in Guangdong. He advocated "joint provincial autonomy" for the peaceful reunification of China, and opposed Sun Yat-sen's unrealistic Northern Expedition Revolution due to Guangdong's actual difficulties. Comment: If he had not rebelled, he would have been a good assistant to Sun Yat-sen.
