On May 6, 1937, the "Hindenburg" was burned in a fire, killing more than 20 of its 97 passengers and crew. The German airship was preparing to land over the Naval Air Station in Minlake, New Jersey, but burned up minutes later. The specific cause of the fire is unclear. It is estimated that it is caused by static electricity or sparks emitted by the engine burning the hydrogen released during landing.
