Master Ye Man passed away on February 15, 2017
On February 15, 2017 (January 19, 2017 in the lunar calendar), Master Ye Man passed away. Mr. Ye Man (1914- 2017), a famous scholar of Chinese studies in the United States, passed away at his home in Los Angeles at 10 a.m. local time on February 15 (2:00 a.m. Beijing time on the 16th). He lived at the age of 103. When you passed away, you were free from illness and at ease, and everything in front of you was properly arranged. Ye Man, formerly known as Liu Shilun, was born in 1914. His ancestral home was in Hunan Province. He graduated from Peking University and lives in Los Angeles, USA. He is one of the few famous Chinese scholars in the world who integrates Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. He was educated at the age of six and started his studies with Zuo Zhuan. In 1935, he was specially admitted by Mr. Hu Shizhi, then dean of the School of Liberal Arts of Peking University, to study in the Department of Economics of Peking University Law School. In his middle age, he studied Buddhism in order to understand life and death. He successively served Mr. Nan Huaijin and Chen Jianmin as teachers. While living in Los Angeles, USA, I came into contact with different Western religions such as Christianity and Islam, and studied Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism for many years. I have unique insights into Eastern and Western culture, philosophy and religion. In the 1960s, the "Wenxian Society" was established in Taiwan. In the 1970s, the "Wenxian Academy" was established in Los Angeles, USA. In the mid-1980s, Ye Man represented the "Chinese Buddhist Society"(Taiwan) and was elected vice president of the World Buddhist Friendship Association. During this period, he met Zhao Puchu, president of the Buddhist Association of China, and became close friends. In 1990, Yeman raised US$320,000 to rebuild Yunju Temple. In 1992, Yeman received a gold medal from the World Buddhist Association and a Buddhist Conference attended by representatives from 27 countries. Ye Man was an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Fu Jen Catholic University and editor-in-chief of a women's magazine. He has inherited thousands of lectures on various classic courses in Chinese studies and has written a number of anthologies. He enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad.
