The police and the People's Liberation Army climbed the city wall to block the sparrow cave. On April 19, 1958, starting at 5:00 in the morning, Beijing laid a net to encircle and suppress the "bad bird" - the sparrow. The city's three million people fought all day, and the results were extremely brilliant. By 10:00 pm on the 19th, according to incomplete statistics, a total of 83,249 sparrows had been exhausted, poisoned, and killed in the city. At around 4:00 am on the 19th, the millions of sparrow-suppressing troops in the capital picked up gongs, drums, bamboo poles, and flags, and began to move towards the designated combat posts. More than 830 doping areas were sprinkled with poison bait, and more than 200 shooting areas were ambushed by a large number of sharpshooters. At five o'clock, when Vice Mayor Wang Kunlun, the commander-in-chief of Beijing's encirclement and suppression of sparrows, gave an order, in the vast area of more than 8,700 square kilometers of the city, there were immediately gongs and drums, firecrackers, gunshots, and colorful flags. There were people everywhere on the houses, trees, and courtyards. Thousands of eyes were watching the sky. Dummies and straw men shook in the wind and came to cheer. They annihilated 966 sparrows in one day, of which 40% died of exhaustion. In the bait-luring area of the Nanyuan Dongjiangying Township Production Station, 400 sparrows were poisoned within two hours. A total of 2,000 residents were dispatched in the area of Taoranting in Xuanwu District to besiege the sparrows. They coaxed the sparrows into the annihilation area of Taoranting Park and the poison bait area of Taoranting Swimming Pool. In most of the half day, a total of 52 sparrows were wiped out. Within a ten-mile radius around Yuyuantan in Haidian District, more than 3,000 people attacked the sparrows from both water and drought. People drove the sparrows from all directions to the trees in the center of the lake. The sharpshooters drove small boats to focus on shooting, and the dead and exhausted sparrows fell into the water one after another. After the evening, the youth commandos went to the woods, city walls, eaves, etc. to dig nests, block nests, and capture sparrows.
