He believed that only by replacing the monopoly of the economy by the church and aristocracy with capitalism could the country embark on the path to prosperity. He also believed that only by adopting a constitutional government based on federalism could the country's political situation be stable. After the 1853 election, the Conservatives returned to power and many prominent Liberals, including Juárez, were exiled. In 1855, he returned to China to join the new government. Juárez was elected president in 1861. His political success was a protracted struggle. He continued to overcome popular social prejudices against his Indian origin. His domestic reforms enabled Mexico to rid itself of the remnants of neo-colonialism. The anti-French struggle he led has achieved great results. Unfortunately, he died of heart attack on July 18, 1872.
